Consol Energy to move longwall coal mining at Bailey Mine

Consol Energy said Monday it intends to resume coal mining at its Bailey Mine complex in southwest Pennsylvania, Kallanish Energy learns.

The company will begin mining a new 5L longwall area that is already permitted while it waits to get a state-required permit to continue mining a section that runs under a stream near Ryerson Station State Park.

On Aug. 15, a state environmental hearing board had raised issues about stream reclamation. As a result, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection needs more time to study that permit request, the company said.

Consol was forced to halt longwall mining on its 4L longwall panel on Sept. 1, because of the state delay in approving the permit. About 300 miners were laid off on Sept. 11.

The company said the longwall move would last about four weeks. It is implementing several measures to mitigate production impacts. That includes additional work shifts and recalling furloughed workers.

The company will be able to meet customers’ needs, Consol said. It is standing by its full-year 2017 coal production and financial estimates.
