Chris Wright Nominated To Lead US Energy Sector: Can Someone Who Aids Oil Companies Pave To Sustainable Energy?

President-elect Trump has recently nominated Chris Wright for the head of the US Department of Energy. This has resulted in a huge controversy with the Wright supporters claiming it was a bold choice, while the rest argue that the selection is illogical given the ongoing global challenges. In this article, we will look into who Chris Wright is, about his various statements that have given rise to controversies, and how different people are reacting to this nomination.

Who is Chris Wright?

Chris Wright is the founder, CEO, and Chairman of the Liberty Energy. The company is even listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Chris stepfooted into the energy industry after completing his mechanical engineering course at MIT. He was the founder of Pinnacle Technologies, a firm that introduced hydraulic fracture mapping. It served as a key factor in the launch of commercial shale gas production at that time.

Chris has also founded many major companies like Liberty Resources and Liberty Midstream Solutions. He is also a board member of several companies and non-profit ventures and is widely known for his work in the energy industry, especially on oil, gas, nuclear, solar, and geothermal.

Christ Wright & His Controversial Statements

The US has seen a significant increase in the use of clean energy in the past few years. However, the new Donald Trump nominee does not entirely agree with this. Wright is the chief executive of Liberty Energy, the second-largest fracking services company in the world. He has made several comments and posts on various occasions against the ongoing climate change efforts.

According to him, “There is no climate crisis, and we’re not in the midst of energy transition either”. His opinion is widely influenced by his ambition to sell more oil and gas at a time when countries are turning away from fossil fuels. Even though Wright hasn’t argued against climate change, he has argued against various policies that were put forward to reduce the impact of climate change.

IPCC Contradicts Wright

The IPCC is the world’s most authoritative body on climate change. They have stated that human-amplified climate change had a drastic impact on the weather and climate across the globe. They also claimed that it has resulted in significant loss of life and livelihoods. The Department of Energy’s website also says “A clean energy revolution is taking place across America, understood by the steady expansion of the US renewable energy sector”.

This is in direct contrast to Wright’s words on the lakh of the climate crisis and regarding the energy transition. With various countries starting to invest twice as much as they spend on fossil fuels, the investment in solar panels and other renewable energy sources has surpassed all other generation technologies put together.

The implication of Wright’s Nomination On Different People

Trump’s nomination of Wright as the head of the energy sector has given rise to many debates and scrutiny. This is no surprise considering the fact that Chris has actively voiced against green energy transition in the past. Wright has continuously argued against the adoption of green energy, promoting the importance of fossil fuels. He is also saying that spending too much on alternative energy might lead to a compromise on energy security. He also has a connection with numerous influential climate skeptics. This is troubling for many.

Wright’s nomination has raised fear in many environmentalists. They are currently worrying that appointing him as the head of the energy department could negatively affect the processes that the US made so far to reduce carbon emissions and towards green energy transition. However, various governors and other lawmakers are actively working toward introducing various policies on climate change regardless of this leadership change announcement.

In essence, Wright’s selection as the Energy Secretary is likely going to bring major changes in the US Energy policies. However, this only comes into effect only if Wright gets confirmed. As of now, we can only wait and see what the future holds for the US energy sector.
